NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – The first four U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers have received their draws for the World Wrestling Championships, and will start their competition on Tuesday.
2018 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OPTC) received the No. 1 seed at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. She will have a first round bye, and will then face the winner of Betzabeth Arguello of Venezuela) and Thi Dao Bui of Vietnam. Arguello was a 2019 Pan American Games silver medalist, while Bui was 10th in the 2019 Asian Championships.
Hildebrandt is competing in her third Senior World Championships.
In her quarterbracket are 2009 World champion Sofia Mattsson of Sweden and 2018 World champion Mayu Mukaida of Japan
Making her fifth Senior World Championships appearance is Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP). Conder’s first opponent at 50 kg/110 lbs. will be 2017 World bronze medalist Son-Hyang Kim of North Korea. Conder is a two-time Pan American Games champion (2015 and 2019).
If Conder wins her first match, she draws No. 2 seed Yanan Sun of China, a 2013 World champion.
There are two U.S. competitors in the first group of women freestyle wrestlers who are wrestling in their second Senior World Championships: Jacarra Winchester (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Victoria Francis (Litchfield, Ill./Titan Mercury WC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.
Winchester, who was fifth at the 2018 World Championships, opens against 2013 World University bronze medalist Madina Nadirova of Kyrgyzstan. Winchester received the No. 3 seed in her weight class.
Francis will face 2019 Pan American champion Dejah Slater of Canada in her opening match. There are 12 athletes in her weight class, so if Francis wins her opening match, she advances to the quarterfinals.
Francis made her first Senior World appearance was in 2017.
Two of the weight classes starting on Tuesday are Olympic weight classes: 50 kg/110 lbs. and 53 kg/116.5 lbs. The top six placewinners in each of these two weight classes will qualify their nation to compete at that weight at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Competition begins on Monday at 11:00 a.m. local time, with action through the quarterfinals in these three weight classes. The semifinals at these weights begin at 4:45 p.m. local time. Nur-Sultan is 10 hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern Time Zone.
