TMWC US Open preview: Women’s 53 kg

Women’s action from the U.S. Open will begin in one week at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas. With the end goal of claiming a spot on the World team through the World Team Trials and Final X, 53 kg will be a long and arduous journey. As a World Silver medalist Sarah Hildebrant of the NYAC sits in the finals, one challenger spot remains. TMWC has three wrestlers who will battle for the final bid into the Final X 53 kg spot: Cody Pfau, Gracie Figueroa and Katherine Shai.

Cody Pfua comes into the U.S. Open after claiming a spot on the 2018 National Team. She has been a long-time threat in the lightweights on the national stage. Pfau is known to be a tough and gritty competitor with a high pinning percentage. In 2018 Pfau transferred over to the Olympic Training Center and since her development is continued to grow. Wrestling fans can expect great things from Cody Pfau.

Also at 53 kg is youth phenom Gracie Figueroa. Along with fellow former Selma high school standout wrestler, Alleida Martinez, Gracie Figueroa helped Menlo College win their first WCWA National title this year. Gracie was a 4X CA State Champion and Junior World medalist. In her college freshman campaign, she has already earned her first national title. This will be Gracie’s first U.S. Open at the senior level.

Katherine Shai is no stranger to the U.S. Open. As a 5x National team member, Shai competed at the highest levels nationally. Formerly known as Katherine Fulp Allen, Shai was also a 2X Olympic Alternate. Katherine Shai is back in competition after taking a several year hiatus.
